Sam Francis

Sam Francis is a major figure in American abstract expressionism. Its painting is characterized by a vibrant use of colour, often spread in stains, splashes and open spaces allowing the canvas to breathe. Deeply influenced by the experience of light and by European and Asian culture, Francis explores the relationship between colour, space and energy. His work, both expansive and meditative, causes spontaneous dialogue of gesture and acute sense of composition.
